ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — New Mexico has many smart and talented teens. Now one Albuquerque teenager is getting a prestigious award.

Carolyn Baca, 18, is one of just five teens in the United States to receive the Hope Scholarship. It’s a full-ride college scholarship to Blackburn College, a liberal arts school in Illinois.

Blackburn serves students who might not otherwise be able to afford college.

“My dream was to be the first person to actually finish college in my family,” Baca said. “My dad went to college, my brother went to college, but they never actually finished. I want to get something higher than an associate’s. I decided to aim for a lot higher and become a doctor.”

Baca is currently a senior at Health Leadership High School, an Albuquerque charter school dedicated to hands-on, project-based learning through the lens of the health profession.
